Cost of ownership FAQs

How much does it cost to own a small airplane per year?

It depends mostly on the aircraft class and how much you fly. A two- or four-seat trainer-class single often runs in the low tens of thousands of dollars per year at about 100 hours including insurance, storage, the annual and reserves, before any loan payment; high-performance singles and twins cost several times that. Fuel alone is about $7.24 per gallon for 100LL (AirNav national average, September 2026).

What are the fixed costs of aircraft ownership?

Fixed costs are paid whether you fly or not: insurance, hangar or tie-down, the annual inspection, database and subscription fees, and loan payments. Variable costs scale with hours: fuel, oil, engine and maintenance reserves.

How do I budget for an engine overhaul?

Divide the expected overhaul cost by the engine’s time between overhauls (TBO) to get a per-hour reserve, and set that money aside every hour you fly. Low-utilization owners should also plan for calendar limits and corrosion, which make the per-hour reserve effectively higher.

Should the loan payment be part of cost of ownership?

Yes. Each page here includes a financing line at current market assumptions (about 6.99%–9.99% APR as of September 2026) so you can see the true monthly cost of owning, not just operating.
