Aircraft Affordability Calculator
Start with the monthly amount you want to spend on flying. The calculator estimates the maximum aircraft price that fits once you include the loan payment and the real costs of ownership.

Where will you keep your aircraft? π
π Important: These are estimates based on typical aviation costs. Actual expenses vary widely by aircraft type, age, location, and usage. Always consult with:
- Insurance providers for exact premium quotes
- Local FBOs (Fixed Base Operators) for hangar & fuel costs
- Aircraft mechanics for maintenance estimates
- Your lender for current interest rates

How the calculation works
The calculator converts your available payment into a loan amount using the amortization formula at your rate and term, adds your down payment, then layers estimated insurance, storage, maintenance and fuel on top to show total monthly and annual ownership cost. Cost estimates are planning figures β replace them with real quotes for the aircraft you're considering.
For model-specific budgets see cost of ownership; for the method behind the categories see the operating cost breakdown.
Frequently asked questions
How much airplane can I afford?
Work backwards from a monthly budget: subtract insurance, storage, maintenance reserves and fuel for the hours you plan to fly, then convert what is left into a loan amount at your expected rate and term, and add your down payment. That is the price ceiling this calculator shows.
What should my aircraft payment be relative to income?
There is no single published rule. Lenders look at total debt-to-income, liquid reserves after closing and the stability of your income. A practical test: can you cover the full monthly ownership cost β not just the payment β without drawing down emergency savings?
Why is total ownership cost higher than the loan payment?
Because fixed costs (insurance, hangar, annual) and hourly costs (fuel at about $7.24/gal 100LL, engine and maintenance reserves) often equal or exceed the loan payment on smaller aircraft.
